My Mission in Life

I went on to the party
To give those clowns a chance
The music there was fashion
The guys talked through their pants
And I was trying hard to get some girl to come to planet earth
But all she wanted me to do was dance
She couldn't understand why I disagreed with every word that she'd spout
And she'd say, "Why must you be such a prisoner of doubt?"

I started working downtown
'Cause I'd just had the scare
Of seeing three long decades pass
Without puttin' in my share
I tried to be what I was bred to be
Without being so aware
And I was awfully ambivalent about the fruits of my work
But I tried not to care
And they had me believing we were better than the working class
But I still haven't figured out exactly what we did down there
They couldn't understand why I'm so perplexed about the work we all do
And they'd say, "Why do you make such a fuss and come so unglued?"

I've prayed sometimes that I could pray
And be a better man
And get myself believing in some
Death-defying plan
And I've spent hours talking with the faithful

But I can't understand why they never entertain
The slightest question of doubt

What your life's all about?"
