lightning bolts were striking all 
night
i stayed up late, trying to write
you were out of town, i was 
underground

show
and i couldn't play any song that i

i couldn't think of the words, no, 
not even the chords
so i dropped my guitar and ran out 
the door
and all the while, in the other room
matty was having a bad dream too
he had chopped off somebody's head 
with an axe
i guess nightmares are born from 
thunder booms

then i woke up, and i opened the 
door
and i wasn't worried about anything 
anymore
i knew every word to every song i 
ever sung
i filled up my lungs, and i sung 
everyone
to the trees!  to the leaves!
that were growing on their branches!
to the cats!  to the birds!
as they were trying to catch them!
