39 LASHES
COQUI
Is this a fact or fiction?
I heard a cruel description
About a blameless victim
Who served a vicious sentence
Thirty-nine lashes on his back
A crown of thorns shoved on top of his head while they laughed
Jagged nails driven thru his flesh
On a tree where he later would end up dead
How could they kill
A righteous man
Who only spoke of truth and love
Our lord's command?
He paid the price (the price of death)
For all our sin
He sacrificed a perfect life
So we may live
Right before his death
He made a prayer to forgive
The mockers, insulters
Who were blind to the grace he would give
And right beside him
Was a sorrowful thief
Who cried of repentance
Please remember me when you are king
The earth was shook, the sky went black
The curtain of the temple was torn in half
He cried to God, his spirit left
Down below to the fire of darkest depths
On the third day his word came true
The dawn of hope for me, for you
And out of the depths the son of God
Rose from the grave against the odds
That's why they killed
The righteous man
Who only spoke of truth and love
Our lord's command
He paid the price (the price of death)
For all our sin
He sacrificed a perfect life
So we may live
