Intro:
C
C Yeah I try to write it out, not sure
Em what I recall
Am Fm I can’t tell if it’s memory or story telling now
C It happened very quickly but it
Em seemed to last for hours
Am And everything was crisp and clean
Fm till all came crashing down
Dm Fm So much fire and debris that I was
C F nearly blind with panic,
Am F and there was no one anywhere to
C F turn to be saved
Am F from the tyranny and cavalcade.
Dm Fm And all use was lost.
C And the more that I would struggle,
Em the more that I became entwined
Am And the thickets & the thorns
Fm became my flesh and I was vine.
C Creeping deep into the pavement,
Em breaking ground as I grew fast
Am To the center of the city and up
Fm again where I did gasp
Dm Fm in the air or the breeze and I was
C F still alive with a start

Am F And there were people everywhere
C F to behold and admire
Am F And I longed to be one of them and
Dm Fm though I was lost.
C I felt familiar with my
Em surroundings, though they didn’t look quite right
Am Like someplace that I had been
Fm before, under cover of night.
C And I found my way by light of day
Em to the center of a crowd
Am and told them I was one of them and
Fm begged them for their help.
Dm Fm And with stones they took their
C aim, and I knew I would die at their
F hands
Am F Where I was crowned a heretic to
C F Am be loathed and set fire and laid upon a
F pyre of fire
Dm Fm And as I cast my eyes to the sky I felt your touch,
C so gentle and so soothing that I
Em knew I had been saved,
Am but my movements were so labored
Fm and my will had been betrayed
C But my lips they work alone now and
Em to them I am enslaved.
Am And the slightest indiscretions
Fm that I made were met with rage
Dm F And I burned to be free and then
C you rescued me
F Am with your voice and beckoned me
F C F beside you and your touch was alive.
Am F Sensational and vibrant and with
Dm Fm care and your words
C You say “Sleep it is a stealthy
Em thing, you cannot know its plans.
Am You were only dreaming, dear, and
Fm now here with me again.”
C You ask if I’d account to you the
Em spirit of my night
Am And you handed me this pad and this
Fm pen with which to write.
Dm Fm While it’s fresh in your mind.
C Am G Before it gets away
F C Am G Before it gets away
F C Am G Before it gets away
F C Before it gets away…
