Tono:
D G I remember the night that he
D came in
G D from the wintry cold and damp.
Bm A giant of a man in an oilskin coat
G and a bundle that told he was a
A tramp
D He stood at the bar and he
G D called a pint,
G then turned and gazed at the
D fire.
Bm "On a night like this to be safe and dry,
G A is my one and only desire."
D G So here's to those that are dead
D and gone,
Bm A the friends that I loved dear.
D G And here's to you and I'll bid you
D adieu,
A D saying Donegal Danny's been here
Bm me boys,
D A D Donegal Danny's been here.
D G Then in a voice that was
D hushed and low,
G he said 'Listen I'll tell you a
D tale, how a man of the sea became a
Bm man of the roads,
G A and never more will set sail.

D I've fished out of Howth and
G D G D Killybegs, Ardglass and Baltimore.
Bm But the cruel sea has beaten me,
G and I'll end my days on the
A shore."
D G One fateful night in the wind
D and the rain,
G D we set sail from Killybegs town. There were five of us from sweet
Bm Donegal,
G A and one from County Down.
D G We were fishermen who worked
D the sea,
G D and never counted the cost. But I never thought ere that
Bm night was done,
G that my fine friends would all
A be lost.
D Then the storm it broke and
G D drove the boat,
G to the rocks about ten miles
D from shore.
Bm As we fought the tide we hoped inside,
G A to see our homes once more.
D G Then we struck a rock and
D holed the bow,
G and all of us knew that she'd
D go down.
Bm So we jumped right into the icy sea,
G and prayed to God we wouldn't
A drown.
D G But the raging sea was rising
D still,
G D as we struck out for the land. And she fought with all her
Bm cruelty,
G A to claim that gallant band.
D G By St John's Point in the
D early dawn,
G D I dragged myself on the shore.
Bm And I cursed the sea for what she'd done,
G and vowed to sail her never
A more.
D Ever since that night I've been
G D on the road,
G D travelling and trying to forget,
Bm that awful night I lost all my
G A friends, I see their faces yet.
D G And often at night when the
D sea is high,
G and the rain is tearing at my
D skin,
Bm I hear the cries of drowning men,
G A floating over on the wind'.
