That's just how I chose to play the chords, because it’s easier to transition between them.
For the E chord, I just rest my hand gently on the last string to mute it. I basically use
the base of my index finger if that makes any sense. And I play the F#m like you would a C#m
on guitar, with a barre on the fourth fret and essentially a Dm chord in front of it. But it
still sounds good with the normal F#m.
