Gray November
James Hanzie
November seventeenth, 2013
Madison's already freezing again
Snow collecting near the bus stop lights
And I'm pretending not to check my phone
Yellow kitchen light at 2AM
Coffee gone cold beside the sink
The heater shakes inside the apartment walls
Like this whole building's trying not to collapse
Gray November
Everything stays unfinished here
Conversations
Voicemails
People leaving slowly
I drove down East Washington tonight
Streetlights stretching across the ice
Every radio station sounds distant
Like somebody speaking through water
And I still wait for your name
To light up the screen again
Even knowing silence
Has become our favorite language
Gray November
You said winter makes you disappear
Maybe that's why I keep losing you
Every single year
There's frost climbing up the windshield
The clock says 3: 16
Somewhere outside the city limits
The world finally goes quiet
But my head never does
