You fell in love or threw it away
You're looking for the perfect thing to say

Might make you laugh or make you cry
Might help you make it through a bad goodbye
Cause you've been through it and so have I

I remember all the times I felt
Like somebody knows me all to well
Cause it was my life story I was listening to
I Don't know about you

But I've buried love ones and a few good friends
I've held a brand new baby in my hands
It ain't just what i do it's who I am
And that's why I write songs

I remember how it blew my mind
When I played my song and watched a grown man cry
And it was at that moment I just knew
What I was born to do

Most songwriters never get the fame
Some folks wouldn't recognize their names
But chances are you probably sang along

To Harlen Howard or Bob McDill
Whitey Shafer or Whispering Bill
All the times they ever gave me chills
That's why I write songs
