Prometheus on the 405

The trees preach better than a man can
Better a believer than a madman
A church is more than the sanctimonious
    Sleeping kings, and the poets

They say I should see it in divine light
But I see in the huddle on the 405
Something holy in the way they're holding
Onto the hope just to stay alive

If you could read my mind
I'm sure that you'd be horrified
You'd kick and scream and cry
Where did you sleep last night?

    But someone gave me light
Said that I don't need yours to shine
    Call her Prometheus
    She's always on my mind

Is there room for the cursed?
Among the exalted and the virgins?
Do they see the people outside the steeple
    So-called sinners and the serpents?

The old gods gave us fire
But we find warmth in the silence

If you could read my mind
I'm sure that you'd be horrified
You'd kick and scream and cry
Where did you sleep last night?

    But someone gave me light
Said that I don't need yours to shine
    Call her Prometheus
    She's always

    My God!
    Oh, my cathedral of nature
    My God!
Sometimes you feel just like vapor
    My God!
When will I finally meet my maker?
Until the day it comes I'll keep on running to, escaping to
    (Running to, escaping to)
    Escaping to

    The places in my mind
Where I don't have to hide
I saw Prometheus on the 405

We fight in the face of a false God
The prophets and their profits and their guns drawn
Maybe God is a cello in between thoughts
