C F Let me tell you a story, it happened long agoC When the pines were dancing in theG7 wind on the Mendocino shoreAm The town lights were blazing, thereEm were parties everywhereF C G It was Christmas eve and joy wasC in the airF In the dark and stormy night someone heard the soundC Of something breaking on the rocksG7 and a big ship going downAm Some said they saw a light someEm swore it was a starF C That shone out there in the nightG C although it wasn't far In the grey light of morning theyF walked along the sandC Finding pieces of the ship but noG7 sign of her handsAm Except a tiny pair of shoes and aEm woman's ragged coatContinúa después del anuncioF C That lay there at the water's edgeG C in the driftwood and the foam Some said she sailed from India orF the coast of OregonC Some said by the size of herG7 rigging it was some place far beyondAm But why she sailed into a portEm closed down so long agoF C Or if all on board were lost atG C sea no one seemed to know The fire was crackling in the stoveF when he heard the wailing cryC Of a little baby in the nightG7 somewhere close outsideAm He grabbed his gun and he left theEm house, he thought it was A catF C G But he found a woman with a babe,C fallen in her tracks She was cold, her eyes were glazed,F her skin was ghostly whiteC He tried to make her speak, sheG7 just handed him the childAm And then she passed into thatEm endless sleepF C G And he knelt beside her on theC trail and he began to weep Rushing home he stoked the fire andF he bathed the weary babeC Its skin was brown as a hazel nut,G7 its eyes of greenest jadeAm In age it was about two years orEm maybe six months moreF C But he had the look of a wise oldG C man who'd been this way before And so he stayed and he filled theF heart of the man that he called dadC And Shipwreck Star was the onlyG7 name that boy-child ever hadAm His mama, she lies buried in theEm manzanita and the pinesF C Where the wild azaleas bloom inG C the fog-bound summertime
