A Great Divide

It rose before they even noticed
Another pyramid devised
On top a sleepless eye
Below they wondered why
They failed to strike at the foundation

And either way it's suicide
A loss unless they climb
Lie back or cross a great divide

Can't see the city from the high rise
Stay where it's safe and warm inside
Sustain the artifice
Paying for what we missed
Protection from the dangers outside

What's left here for us to decide

Who fights a faith deep as an ocean
And here they say truth used to lie
The priests are keeping score
A tautological chore

And every tiny armageddon
Will bring us closer to the shore
Relieved when they arrive

Crooked empire declining
Recess secession still in mind
Who stops this poison crack from growing
Dreams die watched through slanted glass below the canyon's yawning

With every backwards step march forward
And reassess the battle cry
Champion the wise
