Aaron and Rae

Aaron got me high, it was like that every time
He had a way with words, they would echo in my mind
I met his older sister Rae before the mill shut down
Before I knew their father was the richest man in town

We'd stay up all night if we made it up past two
We shared the sky those mornings, there was nothing else to do
Rae'd be up alone, playing bass or on the phone
Or listening to bands that only she would know

I told all the boys in the caf before school
That Rae took me home so they'd think I was cool
And Aaron overheard me while walking on by
His eyes turned toward me but he just kept quiet

I was up one morning with Aaron sleeping in
Rae came home excited and she asked if I would listen
Her band had made a demo and she played it just for me
It sounded like the ending of a movie or a dream

And I told all the boys in the caf before school
That Rae took me home so they'd think I was cool
When the bell rang she stayed back and pulled me aside
And my lie got so real, as I walked home I cried

The next time I came over, Rae was at the curb
I said: I feel like shit and she said: That's what you deserve
I looked down at the driveway and she stared at the street
And asked: Is this the kind of man you're going to grow up to be?
