In The Basement

Scofflaws

    Continues after the ad

    Kathleen steps down
    into the underground
    Slim, small dress,
    cool in the madness.
    Fresh from a full moon,
she smiles in a good mood.
I offer her a drink and she says:
    "Absolut and cranberry".

    Cigarettes and beer cans
    full swing ska band
    smoke stained lipstick,
    conversation lunatics.
    Who else do I recognize
    invited or otherwise,
    This is not a problem,
    everybody's there in the
    Basement.
    In the Basement...

    Continues after the ad

    In the smoking room
I can't extinguish whom from whom
    They're all talking loud
    puff a hiss hash cloud
    Mike and John rolling dubes and drinking whiskey;
I turn around, I think I see Amy.
Wrapped in sheets passed out by the stereo,
stems and seeds falling down from Al and Johnny-O,
    Alcoholic crowd swell
the Hostess is drunk as well,
but this is not a problem.
    Everyone gets buzzed in the
    Basement.
    In the Basement...

    Quiet down everyone,
we don't want the cops to come.
    Table tops for dancing on,
do the nasty in the lawn.
The grass is filled with party hats,
    pool's filled with broken glass.
Mom is upstairs, worried about the partyers.

    They're laughing, screaming,
    drinking, puking,
cracking up their cars at the
    curb of the mansion.
    Comes down at four A.M.
to make a pitch to this mayhem:
    "If you wanna stay,
You'd better stop this decadence in the
    Basement!"
    In the Basement...
