INTRO: D C D C D C G C D He came into the shop and looked me
C straight between the eyes
D And said, "You know I'm Jesus", and
C I must have looked surprised
D Because he said, "Please don't be
C hasty, no-one understands
G But I've got a way to prove it",
C and he lifted up his hands
G C He was the man who called himself
D Jesus For a minute I was speechless, then
C I looked into his face
D With sufficient lines of sadness
C for the total human race
D And I said, "You must be joking",
C but he slowly shook his head
G And said "That's what they all say,
C I might as well be dead."
G C He was the man who called himself
D Jesus He asked me if I knew a place where
C he could start to preach
D And I said "Well try a church, or
C maybe Brighton Beach"

D And I was trying to be serious, but
C he didn't seem impressed
G He said, "You think I'm crazy,
C you're just like all the rest."
G C He was the man who called himself
D Jesus I was really quite embarrassed, he
C was looking so sincere
D So I said, "I close the shop soon,
C won't you come and have a beer?"
D Then he asked me if I meant it, and
C he gave a funny smile
G And said he'd rather like that, and
C he hung around awhile
G C He was the man who called himself
D Jesus
C On the way he stopped to pat little children's heads
D And taught them one line prayers to
C say, when they went off to their beds
D But mostly they were frightened and
C they looked at him wide-eyed
G And when he said his name was
C Jesus, one girl even cried
G C He was the man who called himself
D Jesus In the pub I asked him, if he'd
C tried to see the Pope
D And he said although he'd thought
C about it, there was really not a hope
D Then he said he thought he'd better
C go, he had some work to do
G He said he'd come and see me in
C about a week or two
G C He was the man who called himself
D Jesus
C Well after he had gone, I thought of what he'd said
D And all his funny actions, they
C kept running through my head
D And when I felt my mind was
C drowning in a sea of mud
G It seemed his pint of beer had
C turned into a pint of blood
G C He was the man who called himself
D Jesus
G C He was the man who called himself
D Jesus
