The Outside

I said my goodbyes and shut my eyes
I turned my back to the outside
And thought about the things that made me crazy
Like re-runs of McHale's Navy
And of the day "the meteorite" came down
Near the edge of town
From miles around people reported seeing the small greys
And feeling very heavy

Like it was ever really here anyway
Big enough to swallow you whole
And good enough to beat you again and again

On the outside - Everything was pretty there
And all that other hippie shit you outlawed
From the outside - Everyone seemed unafraid
Inside each other's inner space was churning

You swore you'd come back for me
What a catastrophe - That promise atrophied
The moment it left your mouth it was doomed
Like pins and needles swarming a hot-air balloon
And outside of my window - A strange red glow
Real horrorshow
And though I wanted to look something fierce
I remembered my training and just went limp
