On the outside she looks so peaceful
with her eyes shuut tight against all evil
and her shoulders drop like a failed messiah
and all her fears rejoice inside her

So she rolls out into the sunlight
and her daddy tells her she'll be alright
but he don't look at her and he don't smile
he whispers a prayer to ease his mind

When she gets home no one says a word
her mama's cryin' doesn't notice her
She turns the lock on the bedroom door
She finds the answer
