Tono:
C The summer sun was beating down,
F C no pity would it show.
C George Chesters office air
G conditioner would no longer go.
C As pools of sweat rolled off his
F C brow he had one reverie.
C He saw himself with his wife and
G C kids in his cottage by the sea. [Verse 2]
C He paid for his car at the parking
F C lot which gave the poor man chills.
C
The attendant laughed and walked
G away thumbing a roll of bills.
C He started the engine with
F trembling hands at the end of a
C long, hard day.
C
And placing himself in the hands
G C of God he drove to the long freeway. [Verse 3]

C The traffic stretched far as the
F eye could see as bumper to bumper
C they sped.
C They drove at supernatural speed,
G which filled his heart with dread.
C
Sometimes they stopped for an
F hour or more and a thousand horns
C would blow.
C George Chester's eyes rolled back
G in his head and his poor brain
C started to go. [Verse 4]
C He came at last to the turnpike
F C gate and he laid his money down.
C He took the first turn to the
G right and he followed the curve around.
C
He took each bend of the
F C cloverleaf, he followed every sign.
C
And when he came back to the same
G C tollgate, he gave them another dime. [Verse 5]
C His hands were tight on the
F steering wheel, his lips and throat
C were dry.
C
He swore by all that he held dear
G he'd make it through or die.
C He took the first turn to the
F C right the cloverleaf to go through.
C
He was quite sure of his success
G C 'til the tollgate hove in view. [Verse 6]
C And now they say when the Moon is
F C full and the cloverleaf is still,
C The sound of an engine can be
G heard labouring up the hill.
C
A dime drops in the toll machine
F C in the cool of a summer's night,
C And eternally that poor car takes
G C the first turn to the right.
